The Gundam SEED series revolves around war-time in a futuristic era, known as Cosmic Era(CE). The story focusses mainly on the causes of war and conflicts and the lessons one could learn. War as you know is beyond imaginable and the SEED series depicts what soldiers as well as civilians would have to go through. It portrays the huge sacrifices and suffering beyond imaginable. If you realized it, Gundam SEED very much resembles World War I and World War II. The only difference is it is in a different time era where far more deadly weapons are developed. Many have wondered why there are such huge conflicts in the world. The answer that this series shows is the ignorance of man-kind and differences in beliefs. Some want war to profit financially while many others desire peace but don't realize what their actions can cause.
The theme is also based on discrimination. In the Cosmic Era, the world is divided into two different breeds of people - Naturals and Coordinators (see Genetic Types page). They are distant of each other because they can't learn how to get along and accept one another. As a result of jealousy and other negative feelings, they shun each other. Because one kind is different from another, they see it as mutany. The main cause of war is when people don't learn to accept each other and work out their differences, and this theme is depicted smoothly into the story.
There are many other themes in Gundam SEED such as love, kindness, and hope. Because of just a few characters in the story who have hope, the war slowly begins to subside. As you'll see in the story, a few people is enough to make a difference and change the world.
