In the Cosmic Era, a new type of human is born. Humans with their genes genetically enhanced before birth. These humans are called Coordinators. With their enhanced genes, they are widely more capable of things than normal humans. They excel physically and mentally in many more fields than Naturals. The decision of becoming a Coordinator or not depends on the interest of the child's parents. With this new technology, the parents can decide what fields they want their child to excel in, what colour hair or eyes, or what genes they want the child to inherit. These requests are then carried out in labs, where the DNA and genes are altered. The physical being of Coordinators are also interesting. Their bodies are more immune to diseases and viruses than that of a naturally born person. Although this is a tough decision because once the child is a Coordinator, their descendents can no longer be Naturals, many people take this without consideration.
However, as great as this new development is, there is one huge problem that gradually develops over years. Many people believe that people should be born naturally. They believe that mankind should not play God. The presence of Coordinators defy all these beliefs. Over time, humans born naturally have developed hatred towards Coordinators, seeing that Coordinators are "mutants." Other factors that play large roles in this problem are superiority and jealousy. Since Coordinators naturally excel (caused by change of genes), this causes many naturally born humans to become jealous of their abilities. This then leads to the feeling of inferiority. On the other hand, many Coordinators feel that their race is superior. Many have believed that all humans should become Coordinators for a better and advanced world.
After Coordinators had enough of alienation from others, they decided to move out of Earth. With their enhanced abilities, they were able to build a life and home in outer space. The space settlements were known as PLANTs. Later on, they developed a military organization called ZAFT as their force of protection.
Naturally born humans are called Naturals. The Naturals do not want to take any part in munipulating genes. Many of them view it as tampering with lives and impurity. With these beliefs they think that Coordinators are inhuman. Naturals often shun Coordinators and disrespect them (as with Coordinators vice-versa). They don't seem to get along because of their race and different beliefs. As mentioned earlier, inferiority and jealous are major factors within this tension. Naturals often feel inferior to Coordinators because Coordinators can do so much more than Naturals. This feeling caused them to somewhat fear Coordinators and become jealous. Society is also a cause in this reaction. Society stereotypes people and as children are young with fragile minds, they slowly begin to perceive this. Thus, as they grow older they develop the same kind of hatred and feelings as their parents towards Coordinators. As a result, this developed major tensions and conflicts between Natural and Coordinator.
The irony in this is despite Coordinators being "better" than Naturals, the Naturals were the first to develop a highly advanced mobile suit known as the Gundam. Gundams allow space combat as well as battles on Earth.
NOTE: As much hate as these two races felt for each other, not all people felt this way. Many accepted each other and settled in a neutral nation, Orb.
